Multilayer Piezoelectric Actuators MPMA-1

Actuators are recommended to be rigidly mounted on a base surface using an adhesive joint. During installation, tensile, bending, and torsional loads should be avoided. The center of the displacement axis must coincide with the center of the mechanical load axis. When installing the actuator into a mounting socket, it is recommended to place a gasket made of PTFE tape (such as PTFE-3) between the side surfaces of the actuator and the structural walls in contact with the actuator’s side surfaces.
When soldering conductors to actuators, it is recommended to:
• perform soldering with the actuator short-circuited;
• soldering time not exceeding 3 s;
• solder PSrOS2-58 in accordance with GOST 19738;
• flux – activated rosin;
• cover the soldering point with K-400 adhesive.
When connecting actuators, the polarity must be strictly observed. Applying minus 25 V to the positive terminal will cause actuator failure. It is recommended to shunt the actuator terminals with a diode connected in the reverse direction.
The resonant frequency of actuators when mounted on a rigid base is more than 10 kHz.
The calculated blocking force of the actuators is ≥1200 N. The displacement of the actuator end face when the voltage changes is characterized by a hysteresis loop amounting to approximately 20% of the maximum displacement value. Actuators have low tensile strength, which may lead to delamination and failure. It is recommended to use actuators under conditions of preliminary compressive preload of at least 350 N. Actuators represent a capacitive load in an electrical circuit and have a leakage current of no more than 5 µA; therefore, in quasi-static operation their thermal losses are insignificant. When the voltage changes from 0 to 100 V, an almost linear dependence of the actuator displacement amplitude on voltage is observed. The change in displacement over time reproduces the voltage change with a delay of no more than 100 µs. During any operation, it is recommended to short-circuit the actuators, since any mechanical loads lead to the generation of charge on their electrodes.
